The ephemeral grace of Fujibakama:
The poetic, delicate presence of an autumn wildflower.
Revered as one of the legendary "Seven Autumn Flowers" of Japan, the Fujibakama (thoroughwort) is a flower deeply rooted in classical literature, celebrated in the ancient anthology Manyoshu and immortalized as a chapter title in the Tale of Genji. This painting captures its purplish-crimson blossoms clustering in soft, airy clouds. The artist’s affectionate gaze toward this profoundly atmospheric silhouette is beautifully palpable through the meticulously detailed brushwork. It is a highly modern piece that effortlessly harmonizes with any contemporary interior.
Gold and silver across epochs:
An avant-garde harmony of historical textures.
This Jidai Byobu features an expansive sense of negative space, isolating the Fujibakama which was originally part of a larger composition depicting autumn flowers from the early Showa period. Compressing and anchoring the overall pale, delicate color palette of the frame is an extraordinary backdrop: brilliant gold leaf from the late Edo period, atmospheric silver leaf from the Meiji period, and a mid-Edo period canvas scattered with slender filaments of sunago. By freely collaging elements across different historical epochs, a brilliant new harmony emerges within the Jidai Byobu, throwing the flower's delicate loveliness into striking relief.
*Sunago: A decorative technique using finely crushed and scattered gold or silver leaf.
