Jidai Byobu
Mid-Edo Period (approx. 1700–1780)
Antique White Chrysanthemum Painting
Plump white chrysanthemums rendered in raised Gofun,
graced by a shower of uniquely elongated Sunago.
The thick, lush petals of wild white chrysanthemums are beautifully rendered in raised Gofun layer, creating a tactile, three-dimensional presence on the canvas. Fluttering around them are delicate flakes of Sunago—uniquely cut into long, slender threads of gold leaf. Perhaps a playful whim of the mid-Edo period master, this rare decorative technique is a striking anomaly seldom seen on other folding screens.
This captivating scene of chrysanthemums, capturing a moment that feels both fleeting and eternal, infuses your space with a rustic charm and breathes the refreshing spirit of an autumn breeze into the interior.
*Gofun: A traditional Japanese white pigment made from pulverized sea shells, used to create textured, raised details.
*Sunago: A decorative technique using finely crushed and scattered gold or silver leaf.
The passage of time on silver leaf,
evoking a profound and subtle charm.
Paired on the left side of the screen is not a young silver leaf radiating intense luster, but an antique silver leaf that has acquired a deeply seasoned, atmospheric character over time. This creates an exquisite contrast with the lovely, delicate expression of the white chrysanthemums.
Through the discerning eye of an experienced antique dealer, the inherent charm of this Jidai Byobu has been elevated, allowing you to appreciate its beauty on a much deeper level.
